During the formative years of my performing career, I decided to take advantage of some sound engineering, music mixing and production courses. I was also fortunate to be invited to work with a PA hire company and had friends who owned their own recording studios. This allowed me to learn enough to become competent at using my own PA system and to mix and produce music for my own pleasure.
At times over the years, I provided Sound Engineering services for my own band, occassionally for friends bands and was often asked to stand in for touring bands. I had a lot of fun, saw some great bands and would always encourage anyone who is interested in becoming a musician to do a basic course in sound engineering.
It cannot replace the advice and expertise of a professional, qualified technician, but will certainly provide you with an understanding of what is required to produce a decent sound!
